Water World Is Back: Celebrating 30 Years of Surf Art

Celebrating 30 Years of Surf Art vintage collection poster featuring Drew Brophy with painted surfboards

Howdy friends,

It has been great resurrecting these old images from the 90s. This old painting, “Water World,” was inspired by the Lost surfboards I was creating at the time.

The concept came from my “First Surfboard Mural,” which is a perfect example of how my ideas expanded into more refined paintings that could be used for t-shirts, board shorts, stickers, and more.

The early sketch shows the characters and movement before the final painting took shape.

You can see that many of the characters are the same in the sketch, just organized into a vertical format as a painting on canvas.

This art was eventually made into t-shirts, board shorts, wallets, and stickers. The wallet was super cool. Then later, it was made into rash guards, boogie boards, and skim boards. It was the first time I had one image on so many different products.

Water World

The main character of the piece was the “Mad Mahi,” which we pulled out and made into a stand-alone character for t-shirts and stickers.

It was a huge success, and you can see how a good idea was pulled apart and used in many different ways.

All of this art was super edgy for the time and difficult and expensive to print. Now, with modern printing techniques, the images come out amazing, and I am so happy to share them once again with old friends and a new audience.

Check out all the great stuff we are doing in our 30 Years of Surf Art Celebration. It will be going on all summer, with lots of epic art being re-released.

Keep your eyes out for any of these original paintings. They sold many years ago, and we would love to know who owns them.

Also, if you have a picture with your favorite Drew Brophy art, send it to us — especially the old stuff. We would love to see it.

Life is Good,
Drew
