Drew Brophy is best known for his surfboard paintings; they are acquired by art collectors, celebrities and musicians worldwide.
Gerry Lopez, also known as Mr. Pipeline, is a legend in the surfing world for both shaping and surfing (he's also an actor and author). There is a long waiting list for a surfboard shaped by Gerry Lopez.
This is a retro 1970s Lightning Bolt Pipeline Gun shaped board that Gerry Lopez made famous. The painting is inspired by Lopez’s stories of his early exploration of Indonesia and the long, tubing waves he discovered there.
He likened the waves to being chased by a dragon trying to eat you. The surfboard itself is a fine example of craftsmanship; this is an art piece meant to display on the wall. Finished so that it will never fade or yellow.
This painting is one of nearly 100 pieces of art exhibited in the MAKING WAVES - A Drew Brophy Retrospective at the Myrtle Beach Art Museum, summer 2018.
